My parents came from the nearby town of Hilbert, both possessing only a small-town high school education. In their graduating class, there were well less than a third of the students that went to college. For my mom, third of a family of twelve kids, the financial burden of college closed any possibility of higher education, as it did for the first half of the family. Her dad was a farmer, and the kids helped out on the farm. Once out of high school, they were pushed into the job world. She began by working as an assistant in a lawyers office, and has since moved on to another company where she has been an executive assistant for over twenty years. My dad was third of five in his family. He was busy in high school, playing sports and working at his dad and uncles garage. He never picked up the mechanical skills that my older uncle Jim did, but he became very handy with everyday jobs. With so many other things happening, his grades were not the best. His teachers never encouraged him to study harder or even try for college. By the time he graduated high school at seventeen, he was moving out to get closer to his new job building harvesters. He lied about his age on the job application in order to start working a few months before he turned 18. When they caught him, he was laid off until his birthday, when they brought him back. It was a good paying job at that time, and after marrying my mom a couple years later, they bought a home. My dad later moved into sales, and then into insurance. Since I was born, he has started a few businesses, many with his younger brother Ray. He reads a lot, and though he didnt do so well in school, has become very knowledgeable through life-long learning and a variety of experiences. A few weeks after I was born, as my moms maternity leave was running out, my parents were desperate for a baby sitter. Our neighbor, a few years older than my parents, had accepted the job for a little while. Not really wanting to do it, she volunteered her mom, an older woman then living alone, to take on the job. Her mom, Orabelle, was furious, but reluctantly took the job for a few weeks. Fortunately, she became attached, and refused to give up the job. She took care of me while my parents worked for countless years, and we are still in very frequent contact today. Almost three years after I was born, my brother Tommy joined the family. By the time he could walk, he was a terror. During our younger years we didnt get along all that well, and Tommy seemed to enjoy fighting with me when mom, dad, and gramma didnt catch him. Being the only girl, all I had to do was whine and he had the whole house against him. Sometimes I found it fun to start things and make it look like he started it, knowing for sure he would have to take the fall. The only times we really got along really well was during sports. Tommy was by far the better athlete, but while growing up, I was very interested in sports. I never had the same level of interest as Tommy, especially when it came to watching sports. Often I found him watching repeating episodes of SportsCenter all morning long, half out of laziness, and half out of having something to talk about with his friends. Since my friends never cared a whole lot about the scores of NCAA games, I never had any reason to be interested. As I grew up, I was into a number of different things, but more than all I loved to roleplay. It didnt matter what I had, I would always come up with crazy situations and creative dialogues. In preschool, the mini desks in the corner with the girls were always my first destination during play time, allowing us to play school and do other scenes too. At home, I also had a small desk, but more importantly was the huge doll house. would play with the house for hours. Sometimes certain people in the house didnt get along with the others, and there was always good drama occurring. I started to develop a better sense of romance and drama in my interactions as I spent time watching All My Children with my mom, a soap opera she finally gave up as I was about ten. I liked following my mom around, talking to her about random things, but she was always spending a lot of her time doing boring things like cleaning the house. Having almost no interest in that, I would wonder over to my dad who taught mea little about business. I wasnt ready to go start my own anytime soon, but I liked talking to him about it. Sports was my other big connection with my dad, something that my brother and I could both do with him and enjoy, regardless of the season or sport. At home during the day when Gramma Orabelle was still over, she forced my brother and I to do productive things with our time, things like math worksheets, spelling and writing, learning the capitols (which my brother always beat us at), and memorizing things. Tommy and I were both fast at the math, and it was something that I would pursue strongly in high school. As I got a little older, my dad spent a lot of time playing sports with us. Especially during the spring and early summer, baseball was huge at home. I played Little League and middle school softball. I also did some basketball, but not to the extent that my brother and I spent on baseball and softball. One thing I never noticed at the time, but seems very interesting now, is how I acted when Tommy and I played basketball one-on-one in the driveway. Tommy just wanted to play, but I was very concerned about drawing out the court in chalk first. I took fairly precise measurements of the dimensions, and adjusted them to fit our relatively narrow driveway. By the time I was in high school, I spent much more time on classwork, sports, and extracurriculars. My parents expected good grades, as did I, but there was never a reward or punishment associated with them. I got very involved in a project that connected my Future Problem Solving team, a four person academic extra curricular, with a group of students in Shchuchye, Russia. Most of my contributions to the project involved researching and communicating the topics we worked with. A decent percentage of my very broad high school course-load was math and science related, my only high school experience with science came in a one week summer camp at Milwaukee School of Engineering in nursing and bioengineering. From that time, I knew I was interesting in medical care, but not completely sure what route I would take. I also wanted to make sure I used my math skills in the future, and I wasnt always sure what direction I wanted As I looked for colleges, I knew I had strong grades and enough extra-curriculars, but simply couldnt commit to a field of study. When I was accepted into Stanford, I knew I had found a good school with plenty of options until I found my perfect career. As a freshman at Stanford, Im still involved in many general classes. This semester, Im taking my first bioengineering class. Im having my doubts about my ability with biological science, but am intrigued by the engineering and problem solving involved.. I love the applied math and science working together. In the upcoming years, I hope to pursue engineering, though Im still not sure which field I will end up in. At least I feel that Im at the right school to find out what I really want to do with my life, always having an option to jump tracks to something new. /01 [\]6UV_4%cuSV| 4AZ !!\!z!!Z#[#־¾¾¾¾¾¾ºκκκκκζֶhrZh!Oh <h\hBh_hhHUh9chh^} h h h<'h h'g5 h 5h h^}5F 01\][#\#%[#m#u#x# $^$$%%hx^hrZh!O,1h/ =!"#$% ^ 2 0@P`p2( 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p8XV~_HmH nH sH tH @`@ NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA D Default Paragraph FontRiR Table Normal4 l4a (k (No List PK![Content_Types].xmlj0Eжr(΢Iw},-j4 wP-t#bΙ{UTU^hd}㨫)*1P' ^W0)T9<l#$yi};~@(Hu* Dנz/0ǰ $ X3aZ,D0j~3߶b~i>3\`?/[G\!-Rk.sԻ..a濭?PK!֧6 _rels/.relsj0 }Q%v/C/}(h"O = C?hv=Ʌ%[xp{۵_Pѣ<1H0ORBdJE4b$q_6LR7`0̞O,En7Lib/SeеPK!kytheme/theme/themeManager.xml M @}w7c(EbˮCAǠҟ7՛K Y, e.|,H,lxɴIsQ}#Ր ֵ+!,^$j=GW)E+& 8PK!Ptheme/theme/theme1.xmlYOo6w toc'vuر-MniP@I}úama[إ4:lЯGRX^6؊>$ !)O^rC$y@/yH*񄴽)޵߻UDb`}"qۋJחX^)I`nEp)liV[]1M<OP6r=zgbIguSebORD۫qu gZo~ٺlAplxpT0+[}`jzAV2Fi@qv֬5\|ʜ̭NleXdsjcs7f W+Ն7`g ȘJj|h(KD- dXiJ؇(x$( :;˹!
